Description

Under the direction of the Assistant Administrator/ Manager, Environmental Services, the Handyman is responsible for performing various duties as required under the Home’s preventative maintenance program including inspecting, verification, recording, reporting and recommending action to be taken.

Responsibilities

  • Perform various duties as required under the Home’s preventative maintenance program including inspecting, verification, recording, reporting and recommending action to be taken.
  • Trouble shoot items for repair, contact contractors if required and arrange for contractor service.
  • Meet contractors and ensure work is completed or items tagged out of service.
  • Perform building and equipment repairs and maintenance as required in the areas of:
  • Electrical, including general wiring of 120/208 voltage, repair and replacement of equipment, lighting fixtures, motors, air conditioners, roof fans, and fuses.
  • Mechanical, including equipment used in all departments, roof top air handling units, diesel generator, fan belts, and filters.
  • Building repairs including floor repairs, replacement of windows and doors, caulking, patching drywall, and painting.
  • Plumbing, including repair and replacement of toilets, sinks and faucets, unplug drainage and sewer lines and roof drains, and water pipe leaks.
  • Responsible for moving, assembling, and installing furniture and equipment.
  • Perform inspection audits as required (equipment, windows, nurse call, beds).
  • Maintain electrical, mechanical utility and storage areas in clean condition and in good order.
  • Perform outdoor maintenance/repairs as required, including snow removal, sanding parking lots, cutting grass.
  • Participate in the elevator passenger rescue and in the event of an emergency perform other duties as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications

What Qualifications are Required?

  • Completion of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
  • Provincial licence or certificate in a recognized mechanical or electrical trade is preferred.
  • Proven ability and experience in performing preventative maintenance.
  • Ability to work independently and skilled in trouble shooting, repairing, and maintaining building equipment including electrical, mechanical, and plumbing areas.
  • Must have a valid Ontario driver’s license and vehicle for picking up supplies and moving equipment and furniture.
  • Ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job.
  • Solid command of the English language (speak, read, write, and comprehend).
  • Compassion, patience, and friendly personality with an understanding of, and respect for, the rights of our residents.
  • Proven ability to follow an established work procedure/schedule and complete all assigned tasks within the timelines as set out, with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work any of the scheduled shifts (Days, Evenings, Nights) - including weekends (shift times subject to change to meet operational needs). This includes availability for call-in scheduling, as required.
  • Must be willing to obtain any, and all, vaccinations that may be mandated by the MOHLTC.
  • Clear Vulnerable Sector and Police Record
  • Must be willing to obtain any, and all, required immunizations as set out by legislation or regulations.
