Under the direction of the Manager, Recreation and Restorative programs the Activity Aide will assist in the planning and implementation of activities for Eastholme’s residents. This job helps to design programs to encourage socialization, provide entertainment, relaxation and fulfillment and improve daily living skills. This role will also assist the Activities Coordinator, as required.

All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.
- Conduct spiritual, social, recreational and entertainment programs for the residents of the Home according to their social, intellectual, physical, and spiritual needs, on an individual or group basis in co-operation with volunteers.
- Assist in carrying out Restorative Care Programs i.e.: Range of Motion, Therapeutic Feeding, Sensory Stimulation, Therapeutic Walk Program etc. Maintain bulletin boards with monthly calendars, daily events, birthdays, memorials etc.
- Maintain accurate records and reports on the participation and progress of the residents in the various programs.
- Complete monthly summaries on select residents and place in resident files. Regularly review these reports with the Director.
- Gather data needed for care planning and surveys.
- Practice and promote safe working habits.
- Communicate and co-operate satisfactorily with residents, family members, volunteers, staff and others.
- Attend in-service and Staff Development Programs and activity staff meetings.
- Comply with the Fire, Health and Safety Regulations and attain proficiency in the methods of sounding the fire alarm, fire evacuation procedures, proper use of fire extinguishing equipment, and other procedures designed to ensure the security and protection of the residents of the Home.
- In the event of an emergency perform other duties as may be assigned.
- Work in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, practicing and promoting safe working habits, performing duties in a safe manner and follow all relevant policies, procedures, and legislation. This shall include wearing appropriate PPE as required.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with all applicable privacy and protection legislation.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Diploma or Degree in Recreation & Leisure Studies, Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology or other related field
OR - Actively enrolled in and within two (2) years of graduation from a community college or university diploma/ degree in this field
- Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) training, DementiAbility, RAI 2.0, CA-ON, PCC, Activity Pro knowledge considered an asset
- Demonstrated knowledge of Long-Term Care and working with older adults and related pathological conditions and special needs i.e.: Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementia.
- Required to obtain a Smart Server Certificate
- Knowledge of various therapies or interventions, to meet the individual’s needs.
- Excellent interpersonal skills & ability to initiate and stimulate conversation in both a group or one-on-one setting
- French or any other second language would be considered an asset.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with flexibility and adaptability.
- Ability to learn, and in turn, teach new methods and conduct activity assessments for residents
- Proven ability to follow an established work procedure/ schedule and complete all assigned tasks within the timelines as set out, with minimal supervision
- Proficient with various computer programs and applications
- Must provide a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one
- Must be willing to obtain any, and all, vaccinations that may be mandated by the MOHLTC.
- Ability to work any of the scheduled shifts (Days, Evenings, Nights) - including weekends (subject to change to meet operational needs).
- Must possess a valid Ontario driver’s license (G-Class) and driving record in good standing.
